| Hammock with Sleep Pad For warm summer use, you can save weight and bulk by using scissors to shorten any closed-cell foam pad since insulation below the knees is generally not needed. Trimming the square corners of wide or full-length foam pads provides a better fit in the curved world of a hammock. Closed-cell foam pads 1/4" X 30" X 72" weigh about : counces and make excellent hammock liners for warm :- moderate temperatures. For cold temperatures, ombining a thin, wide liner pad with a thicker, but narrower, three-quarter-length foam or inflatable pad may provide all the bottom insulation needed. Self-inflatable pads offer greater thickness and may offer greater insulating warmth than closed-cell foam pads. Pads filled with open-cell foam, which create millions of tiny air pockets that reduce conductive and convective heat loss may be a wise choice. Unfortunately, they can add considerable weight. Self-inflatable pads are readily available from most outdoors and sporting goods stores. They vary in thickness from 3/4 inch to 3 inches and are generally 22 inches wide and 72 inches long; the thicker ones may be considerably wider. They all work well in hammocks and range from one to seven pounds. Some popular brands include those produced by Slumberjack, Stearns and Artiach, as well as the Therm-A-Rest line by Cascade Designs. Inflatable pads with non-skid surfaces are well suited for hammocks. Inflatable
pads filled with down offer significantly more insulating thickness with
less weight than foam-filled pads. A three-inch thick pad weighing 1.5
pounds is available from Stephenson's Warmlite.See the information box
