How Much Insulation is Needed?

How much insulation is needed at any given time? This, :f course, depends on many variables, such as the outside temperature, your tendency to sleep hot or cold, _.-our sleeping bag's insulation, your sleep pad'sthickness, the clothes you wear, the amount of air passing through the hammock fabric, the amount of wind reaching the hammock, etc.

The following table is based on my comfort in no-wind conditions, but should give you some guidelines. While these figures might at first seem like too much insulation, you should remember that hammocks are completely surrounded by air, which is often colder than the ground. In addition, I tend to sleep cold and may need more insulation than you do.

Of course, these are only suggestions and there are no hard and fast rules here. There are many possible sleeping bag/sleep pad combinations and only you can judge which one is right for you. The general idea is to choose a sleeping bag to keep you warm on the top and choose a sleep pad to keep you warm on the bottom. Later in this websection you will find an alternate way to use a sleeping bag around the occupied hammock for even more warmth.
