Proper
Hammock Support
The
tip-over level of any hammock can be effectively
visualized as the centerline between the ends
of the occupied hammock. Therefore, the closer
one's body is lying to the hammock's centerline,
the more danger there is of tipping over and the
more tipsy it feels, in much the same way as an
unstable canoe feels tipsy.
Being
worried about getting dumped out is not conducive
to a good night's sleep. Avoid pitching the hammock
too tightly.
Pitching
the hammock loosely and with the long tie-outs
as described above helps ensure the proper degree
of sag of the unoccupied hammock; this is safer
and gives more interior space without compromising
comfort.
Too
much sag here is better than too little. The amount
of this sag is not critical as long as the tie-outs
are sufficiently long and your butt doesn't hit
the ground when you get in the hammock. You will
soon learn to judge the proper amount of sag when
pitching the hammock; just remember to use wide
supports and don't pitch the hammock stretched
so tightly that it is level with the tie-out attachment
points.
