What a gorgeous wilderness lake! Numerous islands
dot this large lake, while rocky shores lend a
glacial beauty.
Hoards
of mosquitoes infest the trees and brush along
the shore, so I've set up on an island. My first
choice island has an occupied eagle's nest, so
I've taken an adjacent island. My hammock is pitched
in trees on a rocky outcrop where winds can keep
mosquitoes away.
No one has ever camped here before. Fly-fishing
with surface poppers was deadly on the small mouth
bass today; fishing doesn't get much better than
this. From my hammock I watch eagles, loons, ducks,
and gulls. Two deer swim across the lake at dusk.
Earlier today I watched a moose maneuvering through
thick brush.

What
a blessed relief to finally be in my hammock,
gently swaying in the sea breezes! It was a long,
hard paddle today against constant headwinds and
waves; there were no places to get out of the
canoe and stretch.
I
thought my back would surely break before we could
get here. An hour in the hammock has me feeling
much better. For the first time, I notice the
very noisy Kingfisher who is repeatedly diving
underwater for his dinner, the large flock of
White Ibis feeding on the shallow mud bank, and
the Great Blue Heron fishing along the nearby
creek bank.
