Proper
Size
Hammocks
must also be sized properly for real sleeping
comfort. This means sufficient length and width,
which are often lacking in many commercially available
hammocks that are mass-produced with cost-saving
shortcuts.
These
too-short and too-narrow hammocks can be quite
unsuitable for the average sleeper, and especially
unsuitable for extended trips. They are also unsuitable
for the big or tall user. Buying or making your
own customized hammock guarantees compatibility
for you and the wilderness.
While
all hammock design features are interrelated and
it's generally inaccurate to single out only one
feature, I will do so here in order to make a
point. Generally, a long hammock is more comfortable
than a short one. I've found that the minimum
length for sleep comfort is at least two feet
longer than the user's height. Thus a six-foot
tall camper should have an eight-foot long hammock.
I've also settled on a width of five feet to efficiently
hold an adult and his/her sleeping bag and sleep
pad. This allows for deep sides in the occupied
hammock and eliminates the fear of falling out.
