Tree Knots
Knots should be easy to tie and untie. Above all,
they should not damage the trees. This calls for
a special multi-wrap, overlapping knot that tightens
against the tree without locking tightly against
itself. Low-memory-stretch polypropylene webbing
straps are well suited for the task. Support trees
at least four inches in diameter are ideal for
the four-wrap knot described below. To tie the
knot, follow the six steps below and refer to
the picture sequence.
a)
Grab a strap at the point you want it attached
to the tree. The strap from your hand to the loose
end of the strap is called the "bitter end."
The strap from your hand back to the hammock is
called the "standing line." Now hold
your hand with the strap to the center of the
tree.
b)
First Wrap: While holding the standing line to
the tree. make the first wrap around the tree
with the bitter end, bringing it back to the front
of the tree.
c) Second Wrap: Loop the bitter end over and around
the standing line and make the second wrap around
the tree going in the opposite direction of the
first wrap, bringing the bitter end back to the
front of the tree.
d)
Third Wrap: Again, loop the bitter end over and
around the standing line and make the third wrap
around the tree going in the opposite direction
of the second wrap: the standing line should now
stay put without having to hold it.
