Avoid Misuse

The hammock design presented in this website is intended for one-person use. The extra weight of any additional person will over-stress the setup and could cause serious injury should the hammock or supports fail. Limit the weight in the hammock to its original design; this may include not allowing heavier people to use your hammock. Note that any user who gains weight after acquiring or making a hammock may also be compromising safety! Do not swing in the hammock. Gentle swaying, :escribed in an earlier websection, is probably safe; :nowever, anything else may be dangerous.

Avoid sudden heavy movements in the hammock. hese can cause extremely strong stresses, far greater qan those caused by normal, gentle movements. The ;reater stresses can cause catastrophic failure of the hammock materials or the sudden release of dead ranches overhead as the stresses are transmitted up e support trees and are then amplified even more by trees' movement. I've actually had the unsuspected ad top of a tree come crashing down simply because Iturned over quickly! Avoid quick movements and be sure of your supports.

Punctures to the hammock fabric should be avoided. Even small punctures can greatly weaken the fabric and may lead to catastrophic failure. Punctures during setting up or taking down can result from snagging on sticks, briers, branches, rocks, logs, etc. Punctures during use can result from snagging by wristwatches, belt buckles, shoes, boots, zippers, eyeglasses, head phones, pens, pencils, flashlights, etc.

The hammock materials are not fire retardant; in fact, they will melt in a flame and can even ignite and burn. Avoid all open flames therefore, and do not smoke in the hammock. Do not set up the hammock anywhere near a campfire since sparks can damage it.

When storing your hammock, follow the usual procedures for protecting nylon fabrics, such as avoiding volatile or corrosive chemicals and UV rays (sunlight).
