Hammocks
on the Coast
Once
in Florida and several times on the rocky coast
British Columbia, I pitched my hammock at water's
edat low tide and watched high tide flood in under
me' Imagine the excitement as I watched the nighttime
phosphorescence in the water immediately below
me while staying snug and dry in my hammock.
Bears
Other
times I've avoided bears by setting up in boulder
fields, on rock cliffs, and on small isolated
coastal islands in Alaska! Yes, I've actually
set up my hammock between boulders and on rugged
rock cliffs without trees! The hammock allowed
me to avoid active bear habitat and safely set
up far from high-risk areas. More than once, I've
used rock climbing ropes and gear to raise my
hammock high in the trees out of the reach of
bears.
