Mountains
Numerous
times my hammock has been pitched on a high mountain
site otherwise unsuited for tents or tarps. In
such places I've had exclusive access to spectacular
vistas, dramatic sunsets,
the full moon flooding the forest and distant
mountains, and colorful sunrises too numerous
to mention. At these times, I feel especially
close to nature and it seems as if the entire
world is there just for my enjoyment.
However,
steep forested mountain slopes are one of favorite
stealth campsites. Many times I've pitched IN
hammock on slopes almost too steep to walk on!
At imes, the ground is so steep that my pack or
gear cannot be left unattended or they will roll
to the bottom! However, once inside my hammock,
with my pack safely '-Ianging below, I'm snug
and comfortable!
Such
sites are special because of their isolation,
,xidespread availability, easy access, great views
and the -irotection they provide from cold winds.
By choosing hese sites, I can be assured that
I am not adding to the overuse of the more popular
tent campsites in the -)ackcountry. At the same
time, my use of the site leaves :io adverse impact
and there is little chance the site will be used

At
other times, I avoid mountain sites that are exposed
to cold wind. Many times I seek shelter from the
wind behind steep ridges, occasionally leaving
my fellow campers to suffer at more exposed tent
sites on the ridge tops.
